Andrew Wormald, PhD
I started my Tai Chi journey in 1999 with a wonderful teacher named Adriaan Van Schaik, who had studied traditional Yang style Tai Chi in the lineage of Dr Chi Chiang-Tao (Qi Jiangtao). At the time I knew him Adriaan had also started to study with Dr Shen Hongxun, and as my interest in Tai Chi deepened I went on to attend many weekend and residential courses with Dr Shen. I had the good fortune to study with Dr Shen for around ten years before his passing in 2011, and, since then, have continued to practice under the guidance of Shen Jin, as well as other senior students in Dr Shen’s lineage. My interest in these practices also led me to study the religions of Asia at university, and this eventually culminated in a PhD researching the history of Buddhist meditation in modern China. These studies afforded me the opportunity to live in China for a number of years, to engage with original Chinese sources on self-cultivation practice, and to discuss the finer points of philosophy directly with Chinese speaking teachers. In recent years I have started to study Chinese Medicine and am learning to integrate a deeper understanding of these healing arts into my Tai Chi and Qigong classes.
